Hey, friend,

Even though it doesn’t quite feel like spring yet, I’m counting down the days until we start to see skunk cabbage sprouts and devil’s club buds starting to pop up. Seeing more greenery isn’t the only change we’re excited about. This spring brings exciting times at Trail Mix too! As we gear up for our upcoming season, we’re bringing on new team members, looking forward to new partnerships and programs, and recruiting new board members

The cancellation of last year's cruise season prompted the creation of a COVID19 Conservation Corps to combat unemployment and prevent homelessness and eviction. Trail Mix was able to employ over 30 additional crew members through the pandemic as part of that program. I’m encouraged by the availability of vaccines but also see a tough summer ahead for Juneau. Over the last month, we’ve received over 100 applications for our seasonal trail crew positions. I can't say that I'm surprised-Trail Mix is a pretty great place to work; but, I also see this as an indicator of the need for work that the lack of this year's cruise season has left us. We hope to work with the CBJ in 2021 to keep people working and our trails in great shape!

I’m excited to be making new community connections and building new partnerships this summer. We’re taking the Juneau Master Trails Plan forward with a new planning team that includes local, tribal, state, and federal agencies to develop a management plan for our trails that addresses the recreation and cultural priorities of our community. We’re also excited to partner with other community organizations to bring back our volunteer events! If you or your organization are interested in helping us keep Juneau’s trails in tip-top shape, let us know here!

Guiding all of these programs is a lot of work and we wouldn’t be able to do it all without the guidance and support of our Board of Directors. We are currently looking for someone to join our board of directors who will help guide the organization in stewarding Juneau’s trail system while respecting the land and everyone’s relationship to it. We’re looking for someone who has strong connections to the land and community of Juneau and can commit 6 to 10 hours a month. We are excited to strengthen our organization through diversity and strongly encourage letters of interest from BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, women, young people, and other underrepresented identities in trail maintenance organizations and nonprofit boards. Apply here before April 12th!

See you on the trails!

Ryan
