What We've Been Up To

Lake Creek Trail: One of our crews teamed up with a group of volunteers for the Snowmobile Club here in Juneau to add more gravel to the Lake Creek Trail. The trail will be getting a new, thick layer of gravel to increase durability.

Treadwell Ditch: We have finished the ditch for the season! Never fear, we'll back on it next year for more amazing projects. The crew on the ditch completed nine new bridges this season.

Horse Tram: The trail received its final layer of gravel and a crew has been working on adding in a bridge. The bridge is being placed to open up a waterway for salmon to move through.

Point Bridget: The crew at Point Bridget is nearing completing phase 1 of the project. They have spent the past few months removing the old boardwalk and creating a gravel trail.

SAIL Ropes Course: The SAIL Ropes Course, located by the Eagle Valley Center, has been seeing major trail improvements! The crew has been widening and graveling the trail.

What's Coming Up

Trail Work: Our incredible crews are still on the trail! Their dedication is truly amazing and inspiring! We've transitioned to closing out the season by doing some preparatory work for next season, bridge planning and building, and tool maintenance.

The Auction: We are so excited to be using Handbid this year for our annual auction. We're going to miss seeing everyone at our annual event, but we're thrilled to be able to still bring the community a wonderful way to support our trail system and local makers who donate items.

  • If you would like to donate an item for the action there is still time!
  • If you have not registered for the auction yet, please do so! By registering now, you can get a sneak peek at all the items available!
  • Bidding will take place on November 18th-21st.

Trail Mix Top Three

Just because the snow is falling doesn't mean you have to stay off the trails! From hiking to snowshoeing to skiing to snowmobiling, there are so many ways to enjoy the trails in the winter! This month, we've been enjoying trails where we can get a glimpse of the mountains.  Click the name of each trail for directions to the trailhead.

Emerson Spur

Emerson Spur provides great access to the Treadwell Ditch trail and a great way to start scoping out the snowpack at Eaglecrest! If you have a fat tire bike, this would also be a great trail to try out some snow riding!

Salmon Creek Dam

Choosing to brave the snow will pay off with amazing views on the Salmon Creek Dam Trail! Take a hike up this mellow trail to view for a view of the mountains and reservoir.

Lake Creek Trail

This trail is perfect for a quick hike or snowmobile journey up into the backcountry. Enjoy spectacular mountain views and the fresh new layer of gravel underfoot.

A message from our Director:

Hello everyone! I’m so excited and inspired by everything going on at Trail Mix this fall. We are working hard to transform our annual auction into an online event, collaborating with our partners to create an area-wide Trails Plan, and our trail crews and volunteers are still working hard in the ice and mud, making this one of our longest and most productive seasons ever. I know that many of the events and autumn community traditions that we look forward to are being missed this year; Public Market, Ski Swap, and Trail Mix’s Annual Dinner and Auction to name a few.

While these events are taking a hiatus, I’ve realized that the spirit of supporting our shared and treasured community resources is what makes these events feel so special and that despite the ongoing pandemic that spirit is still very much alive this year. I’m thrilled that in our virtual adaptation of our auction fundraiser we can still feature some of our classic auction items. We love being able to showcase local businesses, artists, and creators at our auction. I hope that you are able to join us as we continue this longstanding tradition. You can contribute your hobby, craft, and skills to the auction AND register to bid in the auction by visiting www.trailmixinc.org

Our annual fundraiser is crucial to continued operations at Trail Mix. Your contribution allows us not only to build our trail system but also to look forward to plan improvements for all user groups in Juneau. We’ve been working with our agency partners, CBJ, DNR, and USFS to meet with user groups and consolidate our collective trail priorities into a strategic Juneau Area Trails Plan. This plan will outline cross-agency recreation goals for the next 10 to 20 years. We wouldn’t be able to put together this kind of plan without the deep support from our membership.

I am grateful and encouraged to live in a community with such a rich appreciation for trails! I’m also eternally grateful to the field crews who are working day in and day out to build and maintain Juneau’s trails. We are lucky to have one of the toughest, hardworking, most fun having teams we’ve ever had. Thank you all.

Best,

Ryan O’Shaughnessy
Executive Director
