What We've Been Up To

Treadwell Ditch: Last week crew members finished installing the last Treadwell bridge of the season! The Nielson Creek bridge is 46 feet long and is the 5th bridge installed this year. Our awesome volunteer crew has been meeting weekly up on Treadwell to build approaches to the new bridges.

Eagle Valley Center: Crew members have been working hard to finish the new elevated walkway at the Eagle Valley Center. The new walkway provides access to the Amalga Cabin, SAIL Ropes Course, and Horse Tram Trail.

Duck Creek: Crew members resumed work on our Duck Creek Wetlands Restoration project. In this phase of the project, they are ripping up old asphalt and creating a gravel trail.

Christopher Trail: This past month we've had some help from some amazing volunteer groups out at the Christopher Trail. SheJumps and the JDHS Alpine Club have put in time to help haul gravel and resurface the trail. In just a couple hours these groups made a world of a difference!

What's Coming Up

One year of The Dirt: Happy one year to this newsletter, The Dirt! Thank you so much for following along with what's happening at Trail Mix. We love sharing our work with you.

Kick the Keg: There's still a little bit of our trail crew brewed beer "Hike Your Own Hike" left at Barnaby Brewing Co. $1 from each pour of that beer goes towards supporting Trail Mix. Swing on into their taproom to support a great local brewery and Juneau's trails.

End of Season: Our season is wrapping up quickly! Crews will be finished on the trails in the next couple weeks. Thank you so much for your support over the last six months. We've achieved so much this season and we can't wait to start planning for next year.

Auction: Mark you calendars! Trail Mix will be hosting our annual auction online from November 17-20, 2021. We love how this event brings together our community to support Juneau's world-class trail system. Stay tuned for more information.

This short trail was a fan favorite in this summer's Hike for a Pint challenge. This half mile trail leads to a lovely bench with an incredible view of the ocean and Chilkat mountains.

Peterson Lake Trail

Peterson Lake Trail is roughly 8 miles out and back. This trail takes you through forest and muskegs to reach the picturesque Peterson Lake. With minimal elevation gain, this is a great trail for a long day hike; just make sure to wear boots that can get muddy!

Enjoy a long, peaceful hike to the beautiful Windfall Lake. This trail is about 8 miles out and back. This trail is fairly well maintained. If you're an adventurous biker, this is a great trail to try out.

  • As you hike this season, remember that you can report any trail damage on the Juneau Trails Damage Report. Pictures of the reported damage are incredibly helpful so that our crews are able to understand the issue needing to be fixed. Report responses are reviewed frequently and the issues will be handled by either Trail Mix, Forest Service, or Alaska State Parks.

Lily Hope will mentor weavers and address threats to use of traditional materials

Chilkat weaver Lily Hope is one of 15 people to win a $100,000 SHIFT award. The Transformative Change and Indigenous Arts Award is a new program from the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation.

Hope is mentoring weavers and addressing Indigenous land sovereignty in her project and will split the funds with her partner organization Goldbelt Heritage Foundation.

KTOO’s Sheli DeLaney sat down with Hope to find out more about her project. Click here to read more about the project.
